Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent. This year Ash Wednesday is February 22. Ash Wednesday emphasizes confronting our own mortality and confessing our sin before God within the community of faith.
We will be celebrating this day with neighbor churches Advent Lutheran and St. John the Divine Episcopal, in a shared service. It will be Wednesday, February 22, at 7:00pm, at Advent Lutheran, 16870 Murphy Ave, Morgan Hill.
The service will include imposition of ashes. Ashes are a sign of our mortality and repentance. In the Bible, sprinkling oneself with ashes was traditionally a sign of one’s sorrow for the death of Christ. The Imposition of Ashes is a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation.
The service will also include Holy Communion. For those who are curious, you will have a choice of wine or grape juice, according to your custom and preference.
A combined choir will be providing music selections. Those interested in participating in the choir should contact Wanda Garrett, so we can get the music to you and let you know of the rehearsal time.
Attending virtually: The service will be “live streamed” on YouTube for those unable to join in person. On Feb. 22, just before the 7pm service starts, go to this link to view the service online.
