Advent leads to Christmas Eve (Service Dec. 24 at 5:00pm)

Morgan Hill UMC will worship together on Christmas Eve at 5 pm.  The service will be a festival of Lessons and Carols.

The Lessons are readings from the Old and New Testaments that tell the story of the prophecy of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus.  The Carols are songs that show us the beauty of the season.

The service will end with the lighting of our own candles as we sing Silent Night. Come and celebrate the Eve of the birth of our Savior.

The Season of Advent

By Pastor Linda Holbrook

Christmas is the most popular of any season in Western Christianity.  We are reminded of images of the holy family, the poverty and difficulties of Mary and Joseph’s circumstances.  We are struck by the simplicity of the manger and the majesty of the angels singing to the shepherds.  This is the place where heaven and earth have met.  These scenes touch our hearts with the celebration of Christmas.

In the church the season of Advent comes before Christmas.  Advent is a season observed in many Western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The term is an anglicized version of the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming”.

Latin adventus is the translation of the Greek word parousia, commonly used to refer to the Second Coming of Christ. For Christians, the season of Advent anticipates the coming of Christ from two different perspectives. The season offers the opportunity to share in the ancient longing for the coming of the Messiah, and to be alert for his Second Coming.

Advent is the beginning of the Western liturgical year and commences on Advent Sunday. This year Advent begins on November 28th.  During Advent we light the Advent candle, sing hymns appropriate to the season and prepare ourselves for the coming of our Lord and Savior.

This year let’s pause and reflect on our preparation for the significance of the birth of Jesus.

Join the Choir for Advent season music

With the return of in-person worship, our choir and musicians have also resumed making live music during the services. If you enjoy singing, you are welcome to join us!

We are beginning to prepare music for our Advent season worship services. Rehearsals are Monday evenings, 7:30pm, in the sanctuary.  If you’re not able to attend rehearsals, but want to sing the Offertory special music on Sunday mornings, check out “Choir Notes” on our website, or contact director Wanda Garrett to get a copy of the music.

It’s a great way to get into the spirit of the holidays!
