Worship service – April 26, 2020 – “Stay with us”

Welcome from Pastor Patrick: If you are participating in this worship experience on the third Sunday of Easter, we welcome you and invite you to experience the Presence of the Risen Christ.

Here Christ welcomes all, and all are welcome.

May the love of God,
The grace of Christ,
The friendship and peace of the Holy Spirit, be with you.

At Morgan Hill United Methodist Church, our vision, as a faith community, is to create an inclusive, reconciling and progressive spiritual community that welcomes all people based on the teaching of Jesus “to love one another.” (John 13:34-35)

Follow the entire service in the video here, or go at your own pace with portions of the service provided below.

The Prelude sets the mood for the service.  Listen as Denise plays “In the Garden,” a favorite tune that tells of meeting the risen Christ.

Call to Worship

Christ is here, ready to be revealed.
Watch and wait for the new growth that is being revealed.
Stay with Christ and Christ will stay with you.
Seek the Spirit and Spirit will be revealed,
for the Spirit is already here inviting us to stay. Amen.

Opening Prayer

Eternal God, we are here yearning to know you more fully. Stay with us as we worship this day. Reveal yourself in the words that are spoken, the songs that we sing, and the bread that is broken, and help us understand your truth, and embrace your life-giving presence revealed within your enduring grace and love, as we follow in the way of the Risen Christ, Amen.

Opening Hymn: “O Spirit of the Living God,” United Methodist Hymnal #539, played by Denise Melroy.

O Spirit of the living God, thou light and fire divine,
descend upon thy church once more, and make it truly thine.
Fill it with love and joy and power, with righteousness and peace;
till Christ shall dwell in human hearts, and sin and sorrow cease.

Blow, wind of God! With wisdom blow until our minds are free
from mists of error, clouds of doubt, which blind our eyes to thee.
Burn, winged fire! Inspire our lips with flaming love and zeal,
to preach to all thy great good news, God’s glorious commonweal.

In the Gospel reading, Luke 24:13-35 (The Message), we hear the story of the Risen Christ appearing unexpectedly along-side two disciples on the road to Emmaus.

Gospel Hymn:  “We Walk by Faith,” The Faith We Sing #2196, played by Denise Melroy

We walk by faith, and not by sight:
No gracious words we hear of him who spoke as none e’er spoke,
but we believe him near.

We may not touch his hands and side, nor follow where he trod;
yet in his promise we rejoice, and cry, “My Lord and God!”

Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, and may our faith abound;
to call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found.

Our offering is given to the mission and ministry of MHUMC.  Find out more, and see ways to give, on our Giving page.

As United Methodists we are part of a worldwide network of healing, hope and Resurrection faith. It is vital that we continue our giving and practice faithful generosity  as part of our discipleship and spirituality.

The work we share depends on it. In fact, our lives depend upon it. Because, in this time of COVID infection, our United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has first response workers, and many who are volunteers on the front line helping and assisting emergency and health professionals in responding to the needs of people during this pandemic health crisis.

Remember our gifts come from us, as the people of God, for the work of God, to the Glory of God in the world. Amen.

Special Music: “As The Deer,” played by David and Janet Tuttle.

Pastor Patrick’s message, “Stay With Us,” is the request by the disciples on the road to Emmaus to their unknown companion. In that invitation, and in the breaking of the bread together, they recognize they are sharing the evening meal with Jesus, now as the Risen Christ, with them. When we stay with God, amazing things happen.   See it in the video recording above, at 21:07.

Hear and receive this Easter Benediction as you go to live into the reality of the Risen Christ:
Christ is risen,
Christ is with us!
Go and share this good news, Amen!

Closing Hymn:  “Song of Hope,”  The Faith We Sing #2186, played by Denise Melroy

May the God of hope go with us every day, filling all our lives with love and joy and peace.
May the God of justice speed us on our way, bringing light and hope to every land and race.
Praying, let us work for peace; singing, share our joy with all;
working for a world that’s new, faithful when we hear Christ’s call.
